Supported by: The UK's Department for International Development (DFID)

The goal of the Greater Opportunities for Integrated Rice- Fish Production Systems (Go-Interfish) is to secure and enhance the livelihoods of poor and vulnerable women and men in rural Bangladesh. This will be achieved by facilitating the adoption of improved agricultural practices by over 300,000 farmers, facilitating community action to address livelihood constraints by at least 50% of the FFS groups formed by the project, increasing the relevance of partner NGOs to poor farmers, and facilitating the formation of alliances of local NGOs and service providers to address the livelihood constraints of this group.

intensive, experiential learning approach has proved to be effective in increasing the capacity of farmers to manage their land resources, and as a vehicle of farmer empowerment. Go-Interfish seeks to use the FFS to build community-level expertise and experience in farm management and to act as the catalyst for group action to address other constraints to members' livelihoods.

Through the Farmer Field Schools, staff farmers
to apply technologies and approaches that will enable them to increase and diversify yield from their land. These approaches include rice-fish production, dike crop production, homestead vegetable gardening, fish seed production, and homestead pond fish culture, potato cultivation and integrated pest management. In addition, Go-Interfish helps farmers to make improvements in off-farm areas of their lives by encouraging advocacy on certain issues, facilitating access to markets, linking farmer groups with other service providers (e.g. health and sanitation) and encouraging the formation of groups to act as the engine of social mobilization in the community.

Go-Interfish works through local NGOs who play an important role in the running FFS and the delivery of additional services to farmers. Building the capacity of local partners, and assisting them to work more effectively in alliances is a major objective of the project. The project is working in the North West region of Bangladesh, in Dinajpur, Thakurgaon, Panchagar, Rangpur, Nilphamari, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat, Gaibandha and Joypurhat. The project is working from July 1999 to March 2005.
